National helplines for older, ill or disabled people & carers

If you’re feeling lost or are unsure what to do next or where to turn to for advice, there are a range of national helplines out there that can provide you with the advice and information you need or signpost you in the right direction. Take a look at a range of national helplines you can access below:  

Age UK Helpline  
Age UK provides a free and confidential phone line for older people, their families, and friends. The phone lines are staffed by expert advisors who will be able to answer your questions or signpost you to the right information.  

Call: 0800 678 1602 
Opening times: 8 am – 7 pm, 365 days a year.  

Alzheimer's Society  
Alzheimer’s Society has a national dementia helpline which is charged at the national call rate. They also have live online chat which is available Monday – Friday, 9 am – 12 pm, and Monday’s 6 pm – 8 pm for those living in England, Wales or Northern Ireland.

Opening times: Monday – Wednesday 9 am – 8 pm, Thursday – Friday 9 am – 5 pm and Saturday and Sunday 10 am – 4 pm.  

Arthritis Helpline (Versus Arthritis)
Versus Arthritis runs a helpline for anyone with arthritis and those around them, providing up to date information, advice and emotional support. Advice and support available can cover, but is not limited to, understanding and managing your condition, how to get a diagnosis, medication and treatment options, pain management and more. Calls to the number are free when calling from within the UK.

Opening times: Monday - Friday, 9 am - 8 pm. 

British Heart Foundation Helpline
The Heart Helpline provides information and support about the heart and circulatory diseases and their risk factors, including heart disease, stroke, diabetes, and vascular dementia. Cardiac Nurses answer the phones and can answer your queries and concerns, often calls are about understanding medication, recovering after a hospital stay and improving diet and lifestyle.

Opening times: Monday to Friday, 9 am - 5 pm.  

British Lung Foundation Helpline
The British Lung Foundation runs a helpline to support people who are living with a lung condition - giving you the opportunity to talk things through and explore any social or practical difficulties. Calls to the helpline are free from the UK.

Opening times: Monday - Friday, 9 am - 5 pm. 

Carers UK 
Carers UK offers information, support, and advice for those that are caring for others. They can cover topics such as benefits and tax credits, carers employments rights and services available to carers.  

Call: 0808 808 7777 
Opening times: Mondays and Tuesdays 10 am – 4 pm.   

Contact  
Contact is a national charity for families with disabled children who have a free helpline for anyone that supports a young person age 25 or under. The helpline is able to give advice on a range of topics including getting a diagnosis, services your family might be entitled to and benefits and sources of financial help.

Opening times: Monday-Friday at 9.30 am - 5 pm 

Diabetes UK
The Diabetes Helpline supports people who are looking for advice on issues related to diabetes including telephone support to explore emotional, social, psychological or practical difficulties of living with diabetes.

Opening times: Monday to Friday, 9 am - 6 pm

Independent Age  
Independent Age provides advice and support on older age by providing information over the phone for people living in England.  

Call: 0800 319 6789 
Opening times: Monday – Friday 8.30am to 6.30pm, Saturdays 9 am – 1 pm.  

Parkinson's UK
Parkinson’s UK's helpline is free and provides confidential support to anyone affected by Parkinson’s. A trained advisor or specialist Parkinson's Nurse can provide information and advice about all aspects of living with Parkinson’s from medical issues to emotional support to employment.

Opening times: Monday – Friday 9 am – 7 pm and Saturday, 10 am – 2 pm (closed Bank Holidays).  

Mind  
The Mind InfoLine provides information on a range of topics related to mental health, where to get help, medication, alternative treatments and advocacy. Phone calls from local landlines are charged at local rates, note that charges from mobile telephones will vary.

Opening times: 9 am to 6 pm, Monday to Friday (except Bank Holidays) 

Macmillan 
Macmillan’s Support Line offers free confidential support to people living with cancer and their families, whether it’s about money, work or treatment advisors will be able to offer guidance and support and let you know what might be available in your area. Calls are free on all mobile networks and from all consumer landlines (business phones may vary).

Opening times: Monday – Sunday, 8am – 8pm.  

Silver Line  
Silver Line is a dedicated helpline for older people providing free confidential information and advice.  

Call: 0800 470 80 90  
Opening times: 24 hours a day, 365 days a year  

Stroke Association  
The Stroke Association can provide information and support to anyone who has been affected by a stroke and their family and friends.  

Call: 0303 3033 100 
Opening times: Monday, Thursday and Friday, 9 am – 5 pm. Tuesday and Wednesday, 8 am – 6 pm and Saturday 10 am – 1 pm.
